In the novel, walker does not present it as a taboo but as an expression of mutual want which helps women to be comfortable with their body and feel loved. It refuses male authority in sexual regime, where woman feelings and desires for sexual pleasure are discarded. Lesbianism is a counter revolution against the foundation of male privileged society. Lesbianism in The Color Purple is one of the sub-themes of the novel, analysis the relationship between Shug Avery and Celie does have lesbian strains.
